Athletes of the Week

Carly Barbato – January 12, 2017

Congratulations to our first athletes of the week of 2017!

Boys Varsity Basketball:  Jackson Mannix ‘17

Our captain and leading scorer, Jackson has set an enthusiastic tone for the squad as we head into the heart of our season.  He came back from the winter break with enormous confidence in his outside shot, scoring 28 points against Pomfret and 25 points against Hotchkiss in consecutive games.  More importantly, he offers daily encouragement and support for his teammates and keeps the team upbeat and focused.

JV CoEd Swimming: Karen Tai ‘17

We are lucky to have an incredible group of returning seniors as captains on the JV swim team this year, and all of them exhibit strong leadership skills every day in practice and in our meets. This week Karen Tai went above and beyond in her work at the meet against NMH. Not only did she compete well in challenging events, she also exhibited impressive leadership both before and during the meet. With a few students missing due to illness, Karen joined the coaching team to rework the line up and helped get the team excited to take on different events. During the meet Karen swam hard, and cheered harder. After she finished her fourth event, Karen asked “can I swim more?” In that moment, Karen demonstrated her commitment to helping the team in any way that she could, and pushing her limits every day. For novice and experienced swimmers, Karen modeled what JV swimming is all about: being prepared, focusing on growth, working hard, and supporting her teammates.

Boys Thirds Basketball: Carter Hampson ‘20

The Athlete of the Week for the boys thirds basketball team is Carter Hampson ’20. Carter played big roles in both of our victories this week, scoring 6 vs Bement and 8 points vs Eaglebrook. Against Eaglebrook, six of his eight points came in the second half where we only scored 10 points total. He provided vital rebounding and defense, both helping out his teammates and playing crucial defense in the post. Most importantly, Carter has been setting such a positive tone in practice and in games – working to improve his game and help his teammates. His efforts this week have been a big part of our positive start as we’ve returned to action after the winter break and have earned him well-deserved recognition as Athlete of the Week.

Girls Varsity Hockey: Mae Emerson ‘19

GVH Athlete of the Week is Mae Emerson ’19. Mae suffered a serious injury before the break, but was thankfully able to rejoin her teammates on the ice for the start of 2017. Though she had every reason to play tentatively, Mae was her typical hard working and intense self, and inspired her teammates with her dedication to the team and love of the game. Mae is an impact forward for us, and we look forward to her contributions over the course of the season.

JV Boys Basketball: Peter Everett ‘19

Over the past few games Peter has worked his way into the starting lineup, and on our Saturday game against Williston, he left no doubt about his presence there with a breakout performance. Peter was hot from behind the arc, leading the team with seventeen points and also set the standard for spirited defense. We’re grateful to such a passionate player on the team, and look forward to seeing his growth throughout this season.

Girls Varsity Basketball: Megan Graves ‘18

Our athlete of the week is Megan Graves, who lead our team on both ends of the court in our win 57-50 win over Ethel Walker. After the team went cold offensively and did not score for almost five minutes in the first half, Megan stepped up and got our offense going. She was dynamic the entire game, scoring off of deep 3-pointers, drives in the lane and steals that she converted to easy buckets on our fast break. She ended the game with an impressive stat line of 17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. We look forward to our junior tri-captain continuing to lead our team for the rest of the year!

Before the winter break, Rian Bogle received Athlete of the Week recognition from Coach Secker for his efforts on the court!

Boys Thirds Basketball: Rian Bogle ‘19

Rian Bogle ’19 is the athlete of the week for the boys thirds basketball team. Rian has taken a strong leadership role with the team, leading not just by word but also deed. He does a little bit of everything for the team, scoring, rebounding and being one of our primary players with the ball. Against Eagle Hill on Wednesday, he scored eleven of our nineteen points in the first half, most on determined, strong drives to the hoop, ending the game as the leading scorer with 14. Although we finished with a fairly decisive 42 – 24 victory with strong contributions from all of the team, without Rian’s points, rebounds and other contributions, we could quite easily have seen a different result.
