Winning Wednesday: Deerfield Teams Dominates Across the Board

It was a beautiful day to be a Door, as Deerfield teams turned this past Wednesday into one of the most successful afternoons of the season. With matches and games unfolding across multiple sports, the Big Green put on a display on athleticism and team spirit.

On the courts, Deerfield tennis teams came through with a sweep. Girls JV Tennis earned a 6-2 win on the road at Northfield Mount Hermon, while the Varsity Girls defeated St. Paul’s 6-3 in a competitive away match. Meanwhile, back at home, the boys JV team dominated Westminster 8-0, and the Varsity Boys team followed with an authoritative 6-0 win. Typical of the season as a whole, all three doubles courts served and returned well and were dominant at the net en route to their 8-3, 8-2, and 8-1 victories, respectively. In singles, each pair settled into their rhythm quickly, wrapping up their matches in two sets. Only one match went unfinished due to time constraints and the outcome already in Deerfield’s favor.

At Crumpin’ Fox, Deerfield JV golf team battled in a tri-match against Bement and Williston. The team posted a 221, comfortably ahead of Williston’s 245 and Bement’s 259. Crumpin’ Fox was playing hard in preparation for the US Open Qualifiers the following day. Cole Bannon ‘28 earned medalist honors with a four-over par 40. Lukas Machan ‘26 had a solid round with a six-over 42. Juniors Sophie Kamil, Jack Keller, and Nick Smiraowski rounded out the scores for the Doors with scores of 45, 46, and 48 respectively. Charlotte McFadzean ‘26 was one stroke behind the rest of the team. JV plays another tri-match on Saturday against Eaglebrook School and rival Choate Rosemary Hall. On the varsity side, Deerfield defeated NMH with a commanding score of 191-220.

On the baseball field, the JV team handled Willison 9-3 on the road. The Big Green committed only one error over seven innings and capitalized on aggressive baserunning to pressure the defense. Jason Jaikissoon ’28 crossed the plate twice, and Cormac McDowell ’26 delivered a key triple. Jack Vergamini ‘27 and Drake Esquer ’28 combined for six strikeouts, while the defense recorded 15 outs through fly balls, ground outs, and runners caught stealing. The final out came on a deep fly snagged by Jack Zhunio ‘27 in the center. Varsity Baseball also had a strong outing, traveling to Cushing and defeating the Penguins 6–2 to complete the program sweep. Caleb Allen ’25 had a perfect game going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Allen had the best start of the season, striking out 12 batters and throwing 72 pitches with only 15 balls. At the plate, Aiden Barclay ‘25 went 2-3 with two RBIs, one run, and one stolen base.

Lacrosse teams were equally successful as Girls JV Lacrosse secured a 10-5 win over Loomis. Girls’ Varsity followed with a high scoring 15-9 victory also against Loomis to celebrate their senior game. Boys JV Lacrosse outlasted Cardigan Mountain School in a closely contested 9-6 matchup.

Altogether it was a fantastic day for the Big Green, finishing with an impressive 12-2 record on the day. With just a few weeks left in the season, the push is on the finish strong and carry this momentum into the playoffs.

Go Big Green!
