Deerfield’s Varsity Girls Tennis team was back in action on Wednesday afternoon. The team’s annual tilt with Suffield proved to be a competitive and exciting match. Deerfield’s third doubles pair, Chloe and Grace, earned another home win with steady baseline play and effective volleys. At second doubles, Travis Gerst and Blake Coleman played their most complete match of the season and put Deerfield up 2-0. First doubles was a hotly contested match, featuring long exchanges and multiple lead changes. Heading into singles, Deerfield had a 2-1 lead.
At singles, the girls in green built on that lead and secured a decisive team win. Captain Jeanne Mei Larouche’s second singles match highlighted her patient, methodical approach, earning a convincing win for DA. Chloe Schiff met plenty of resistance at first singles. The first set reached a tiebreaker before finally going in Chloe’s favor. In the second set, her Suffield opponent didn’t back down. Chloe had to string together fierce winners and big first serves to close out the match with a 6-4 second set. Chloe Hernandez didn’t blink at third singles and closed out her opponent in straight sets. Travis Gerst soldiered through the heat and long rallies to notch another point for the green team, while Blake Coleman played a strategic and steady match to deliver a decisive fifth singles win. Grace Lodge sliced her way to another sixth singles win to remain undefeated on the year.
Deerfield is back in action at home on Saturday with visiting Exeter.
