Boys varsity tennis defeated Westminster 6-1 on their home turf in Simsbury Wednesday afternoon. The win brings the team’s overall record to 6-1.
With some injuries and illness in the lineup, doubles teams were adjusted for the match. Co-captains Gunter Weldon and Tai Feng teamed up at #1; Charlie Juhas and Anderson Berg moved up to the #2 spot this week, and the Northern California duo of Mac Barry and Jack Webb played at #3. All three courts secured wins to clinch the doubles point for DA.
Singles went almost as smoothly, though Westminster wasn’t ready to go down without a fight. #1 Weldon and #2 Feng had identical scores of 6-3, 6-2; #3 Barry and #6 Spencer Trees both dropped just one game apiece en route to their victories; #4 Juhas had to earn every point of his 6-2, 6-2 victory. At #5, Webb had the trickiest match of the day. Though he quickly secured his first set, his opponent stopped missing entirely and flipped the momentum, sending their match to a deciding third set superbreaker. Webb was unable to put him away, giving Westminster their lone point of the day.
There was no exhibition doubles unfortunately, but Anderson Berg won his #7 singles exhibition match handily, 8-2, while John Rousou stepped in at the #1 JV spot and made quick work of his opponent.
The highlight of the day, however, was an impromptu stop at John’s house for dinner after the match. Thank you, Rousou family, for your warm welcome, delicious food, and a reminder of home for the boys!
