Boys varsity tennis had a really solid showing at home against Taft, defeating the Rhinos 5-1 and improving to 3-1 overall on the season.
#1 and #3 doubles got the job done for the Doors on Saturday, while #2 Feng/Chen were tied at 7-7 before their match was stopped. #1 Weldon/Kasumov went up early, but had to dig in at 6-5 to close out their match; #3 Juhas/Berg bounced back from their disappointing loss on Wednesday and cruised to an 8-2 victory. Jack Webb and Mac Barry, playing exhibition, were up 7-4 before their match was stopped for singles play to begin.
In singles, #1 Gunter Weldon and #6 Charlie Juhas had some of their best matches to give Deerfield the first two singles points on the day and put the team up 3-0. Deerfield only needed one more point for the victory, but tension was high as all remaining matches were entrenched in battle. #2 Tai Feng and #4 Mac Barry ultimately also won, but had to dig deep for their victories. Feng’s movement and all-court play allowed him to pull out another superbreaker victory to once again clinch the win for DA, while Barry’s steady groundstrokes earned him his win right after. Jay Chen was in an epic battle on court #5 and had just won his first set tiebreaker as the match was clinched; despite excellent serve and volleying, #3 Dima Kasumov dropped a tight two-setter to give Taft their lone point. In exhibition, both Jack Webb and Anderson Berg dominated their opponents.
Next up, Deerfield will travel to Loomis Chaffee on Wednesday at 3pm for another road match.
