We opened our season against Cardigan on a bright but blustery afternoon—sunny skies, cold air, and winds that kept everyone on their toes. With a roster full of squash players (whether it’s their main sport or not), this year’s group brought a unique and entertaining style of tennis to the courts from the very first point.
Cardigan ultimately came away with the win, 9–1, but the scoreline doesn’t fully capture how competitive several of the matches were. At the #2 spot, Kyle battled hard in a tight contest, falling just short 5–7, 4–6. Max delivered one of the highlights of the day and Deerfield’s lone point at #6, grinding out a thrilling tiebreak win 6-3, 4-6 (10-7). Max, one of our varsity squash players and new to competitive tennis, was especially impressive, picking up both a singles and doubles win, each decided in a tiebreak.
We also had to shuffle the lineup, with our #1 player unavailable and Ted stepping in to compete, embracing the challenge and contributing to the team effort. While we typically have the upper hand in this matchup, Cardigan earned it this time. Still, there was plenty to build on and a lot of positive energy to take away from our first outing. We wrapped up the day the right way—together, regrouping (and refueling) over Chipotle.
