Deerfield JV swimmers woke up bright and early on Saturday morning for a tri-meet against Eagle Hill and Bancroft. While energy was understandably low upon arrival, the team came alive during warm-ups and carried that momentum straight into the meet. Once the first whistle blew, Deerfield looked focused, energized, and ready to race. We saw lots of outstanding swims across the board, with many athletes turning in personal best times, a testament to the team’s hard work and growing confidence as the season continues. A special shout-out goes to our managers, Clark Hess and Peter Van Nice, who stepped up in a big way by swimming in two relays each! Their willingness to jump in when the team needed them was incredibly helpful and played a key role in securing the win. The meet got off to a fantastic start with our 200 yard Medley Relay of Melody Zhao, Julie Yan, Matthew Susanto, and Steve Kilroy, who took first place by an impressive five seconds. From there, the strong performances kept coming. Jack Schwarting had an outstanding day, winning both the 200 yard freestyle and the 50 yard butterfly. Julie Yan also had a great meet, winning the 100 yard breaststroke and finishing second to Jack in the 50 butterfly. Syd Boswell put together a solid race in the 100 yard IM, earning a third-place finish. Melody Zhao continued to dominate, winning both the 100 yard backstroke and the 100 yard IM. One of the most exciting performances of the day came from Avery Filio, who dropped over ten seconds in both the 100 yard freestyle and the 200 yard freestyle—an incredible amount of improvement in just three days since our previous meet. We were amazed by her determination and progress! Steve Kilroy had a strong all-around meet, finishing second in the 100 yard freestyle and third in the 50 yard freestyle, while Matthew Susanto really stepped up with a great performance in his first-ever 500 yard freestyle. Jasper Penman finished fifth in the 100 freestyle and was an important relay swimmer for us throughout the day. Paul Pshenitsyn had another strong meet and was part of the winning 200 yard Freestyle Relay alongside Steve, Julie, and Jack. To cap off a great morning, Melody, Jack, Matthew, and Clark Hess won the 400 yard Freestyle Relay, finishing the meet on a high note. Overall, it was a great morning for Deerfield JV swimming, full of grit, teamwork, and exciting races. We are proud of the effort and excited for our next meet this coming Wednesday at Suffield. We have been training hard and are ready for more great competition!
