On Saturday, the varsity volleyball team opened the season by traveling to Northfield to face NMH and Austin Prep, emerging with a pair of 2-0 wins.
In the first match against NMH, Aila Zeitlin ‘29 had a number of aces and Evelyn Kunde ‘26 made a number of tough serves. With clean play and good passing, Deerfield took the first set 25-8. In the second set, the Hoggers played some great defense to keep rallies going, but strong ball movement and setting from Emerson Lewis ‘28 allowed Deerfield to maintain their momentum and emerge with a 25-15 win.
In the second match, Lewis started the set with a number of great serves which were followed by more aggressive serving from Zoe Galaburda ‘26 to push Deerfield to a solid lead. Kudos to Hayden Cwiertnia ‘29 for stepping in at middle hitter and producing a nice point near the end of the set which finished 25-12. In the second set, the Cougars played well, but strong play from our middles (Sophie Kamil ‘26 and Harmoni Dobbins ‘26) along with great passing from Sofia Govi ‘28 allowed Deerfield to take the win, 25-11.
Next Saturday, we have our first home matches, against Sacred Heart and Newton Country Day. First serve against Sacred Heart is at 1pm in the Barn with our match against Newton CD starting around 4pm. Go Big Green!
