After a beautiful drive through the hills of Central Mass, the Deerfield JV squad came into Eagle Hill with a giddy excitement for the game. Despite the excitement, the team started off the first set a bit slow with a series of missed serves, uncharacteristic for the tough-serving team. Midway through the set, however, 10th graders Lily Johnson and Clara Lipman took over behind the line and served up three aces a piece to take the first set. In the second and third sets, the Eagle Hill squad came alive on the defensive side of the net leading to some long rallies against tough hitting from Deerfield. Luckily, Lily Johnson kept her serving prowess racking up three aces in the second set and four aces in the third set, which put the team on the path to victory. Madison Stott proved essential on offense for the Doors and led the team in kills for the match. She turned on her hitting in the latter half of the game with four kills in the second set and three in the third. Net-play proved important in every set with timely blocks from Jessica Wu, ’27 and 9th grader Libby Andrews. Junior Setter Selin Aksoy also made a timely tip for a kill in the third set that stopped a surging Pioneers team. Selin, then, shut the Door on the Pioneers by serving an ace for the final point of the match. The team will take the lessons of this match as they prepare for a tough Loomis squad next week.
