On Saturday, September 20th, the boys junior B footballers continued their homestand to open the season, facing the Westminster School and looking to build on the momentum from the first win of the year. The squad was down numerous players and only had three subs for the match, as opposed to Westy, which fielded two complete sides. Despite being down at half-time, Deerfield continued to work hard and came out with a 3-1 victory to raise their record to 2-0 on the season.
Westy took the lead early in the 1st half, scoring a highlight goal in the 8th minute. Shooting from just outside the box, the shot eluded keeper Desmond Drake ’29 and found the far upper corner of the net. Deerfield found themselves in unfamiliar territory, being down early at home, and controlled the run of play for the rest of the half. Despite numerous efforts on target, the Westy keeper came up big and maintained the lead going into half-time. Finally, in the 43rd minute, captain Jack Keller ’26 made a nice run and after being initially denied, put home the rebound to break the ice for Deerfield and knot the score at 1-1. Six minutes later, Deerfield finally took the lead 2-1 on a stunning free kick from Alastair Ylvisaker ’28 that screamed into the net, just below the crossbar. Ylvisaker completed the brace 3 minutes later, finishing a nice run by slotting home a through ball for the final 3-1 margin. Play was relatively even for the last 15 minutes of the game, although Westy never seriously threatened the Deerfield goal. Quad Squad will be back in action on Wednesday, September 24th with a 3:30 pm match on the road against local rival Eaglebrook School.
