Deerfield’s varsity girls tennis team delivered an impressive 7–2 victory over Loomis in an indoor matchup on Saturday. The team swept all six singles matches with a combination of decisive wins and clutch performances in tighter contests. They deserve praise for their depth, focus, and composure under pressure.
Doubles play saw a strong win from Maggie Molson and Blake Coleman, while the two other pairings battled hard in narrow losses. Molson and Coleman won a nail-biter in a tiebreak, with plenty of sharp net play contributing to their winning formula.
Jeanne Mei’s singles match at the top position featured high-powered exchanges and impressive baseline play. Jeanne hit her stride a few games into the first set and didn’t look back. Her ability to construct points and win in different ways makes her a formidable opponent.
Devon Coleman found herself in the battle of the day at second singles. This match featured long rallies and plenty of back-and-forth on the scoreboard. Devon’s win came down to her willingness to adapt and apply patience. The 7–5, 6–4 result only begins to tell the story of this hard-earned win.
Maggie Molson and Blake Coleman rode powerful groundstrokes to wins at third and fourth singles, respectively. These wins were extensions of their great day together in doubles.
Chloe Hernandez must have been experiencing déjà vu as she fought through the longest match of the day. This contest echoed the marathon she played against Taft weeks ago on the very same court. But on Saturday, Chloe had no interest in a third set. After cruising through the first, her opponent punched back in the second. Chloe found herself in a long tiebreaker to decide whether or not a third set would be played. She fended off two match points before turning the tide and winning 12–10.
Ava Carvel didn’t want to be left out of the drama at sixth singles. After a dominant first set, things got tighter in the second. Ava had to knuckle down and grind out a 7–5 victory to put a bow on Deerfield’s big day on the courts.
The team pulls to within one match of .500 with two matches left on the calendar.
