Boys varsity tennis improved to an 8-2 record with a 4-0 win against Hotchkiss in Lakeville, CT on Wednesday.
Unfazed by the long bus ride, #1 doubles pair Li/Weldon shut out their opponents while #2 Feng/Naughton and #3 Sparacio/McMahon battled. With both courts getting broken in their first games, it was neck and neck the #2 pair went ahead 6-5 and never looked back. With their clinch of the doubles point, #3 was paused at 6-6. Tied at 7-7, #4 Kokosadze/Trees decided to play a tiebreaker to conclude their match and pulled it out 7-4.
Moving on to singles, the Doors took the first sets on all courts except #4. #5 Walker Naughton eked out a tiebreaker while #1 Gunter Weldon, #2, Ethan Li, and #6 Tommy McMahon cruised through their first sets. Li went on to double bagel his opponent putting the Doors up 2-0; not long after, Weldon recovered after a loose second set and closed out his match in a deciding superbreaker. With just one more win needed to clinch the match, #3 Anthony Sparacio pulled away after battling closely at the start of his match and secured the win for the team with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 victory.
With the match concluded and a long ride home ahead, the remaining courts stopped their matches. At that time, #4 Tai Feng was level at 1-1 in the second set; Naughton was leading 3-2 in his second set; and McMahon found himself down 4-5. In exhibition, #7 Luka Kokosadze fell to a steadier opponent while #8 Spencer Trees walked away with an 8-5 victory.
DA will host their last home match on Saturday at 1pm against Exeter. We look forward to having lots of families around to watch and celebrate our five seniors: Kokosadze, Li, Naughton, McMahon, and Sparacio.
