Deerfield’s varsity tennis girls welcomed visiting Taft to the pavilion on Saturday while the sleet and rain fell outside. The team performed well and learned a lot in this contest.
The doubles phase required plenty of grit from the girls in green. Deerfield’s pairings found themselves behind on every court shortly after racquets were spun. First doubles team, Maggie Molson and Devon Coleman, battled back from a two game deficit to even the score at 5-5. Their net play and in-set adjustments made for a fantastic show. Ultimately, Taft’s top team earned the win 8-6.
The debut match for second doubles team, Jeanne Mei Larouche and Blake Coleman, did not disappoint. The pair built a four game lead before their Taft opponents pushed back. Jeanne Mei’s first match for Deerfield featured plenty of back and forth, but the two closed out the match with a decisive net winner. The future is bright for this duo as they develop chemistry on court.
Third doubles team, Chloe Hernandez and Ava Carvel, found a way to claw back in after falling behind early. It was striking to see the pair think their way through the match and find a winning formula. The pair earned Deerfield its second point of the day with an 8-6 win.
Blake Coleman earned DA’s sole singles win in dominant fashion. Steady baseline play and well-timed winners earned Blake a decisive two-set win.
Chloe Hernandez’s marathon match at fifth singles was a highlight of the day. The match outlasted play on every other court. Chloe lost the first set but didn’t give up. She took the second in a tiebreaker and battled hard in a third set super breaker.
The team moves to 1-2 and begins preparations for a road date with Suffied on Wednesday.
