Deerfield’s varsity girls’ tennis team traveled to Phillips Exeter for an afternoon match on Saturday. The doubles play was extremely competitive. Deerfield’s pairs battled on every court but ultimately lost the pro sets. Devon Coleman and Maggie Molson clawed back from a 5–2 deficit to tie the match at one point before Exeter pulled away for the win.
Singles play featured compelling tennis as well. Ava Carvel notched a win at fifth singles with well-timed slices and lobs. Jeanne Mei Larouche earned an impressive win at second singles. This match took three sets to determine a winner. Jeanne was in the driver’s seat in the first set, but her Exeter opponent battled back in the second. Jeanne’s spectacular point construction and strategy helped her close the match out in a third-set super tiebreaker, 10–6.
The team looks ahead to hosting Andover on Wednesday.
