Boys varsity tennis defeated Westminster 6-0 at home on Wednesday, April 30, improving to a 7-1 overall record on the season with just four dual matches remaining.
Beautiful temperatures and an absence of precipitation finally allowed for an outdoor match- the first at home for the Doors all season. Though blustery, the team played solid tennis and won all the finished lineup contests.
Typical of the season as a whole, all three doubles courts served and returned well and were dominant at the net en route to their 8-3, 8-2, and 8-1 victories, respectively. In exhibition, Kokosadze/Kasumov struggled with errors and fell to their steadier opponents.
In singles, each court settled in to their matches within the first few changeovers. Courts 2,3, and 5 each won their first sets 6-1; #1 and 6 took theirs 6-2; but at #4, Tai Feng gave up his 5-2 lead and dropped the first set 7-5. As all other courts were finishing up and with the match already decided in favor of Deerfield, Feng entered his second set at 2-2 in order to get Westminster on the road at a reasonable hour. After another half hour of battling, the score was settled at 5-5 when the match was called.
In exhibition singles, Dima Kasumov and Spencer Trees made quick work of their opponent; Luka Kokosadze, despite fighting back from 2-7, lost in a tiebreaker.
Deerfield will next take on Choate in Wallingford, CT on Saturday May 3 at 3pm.
