In front of a great crowd on Wednesday afternoon, Deerfield hosted defending NEPSAC Class A champions King. After an afternoon of great volleyball from both teams, it was the Vikings who emerged with a 1-3 victory over the Big Green.
Deerfield got off to a great start and an early lead in the first set behind strong blocking from Harmoni Dobbins ‘26, Evelyn Kunde ‘26, and Emerson Lewis ‘28. King put up good hits, but excellent defense and serve receive from Zoe Galaburda ‘26 and Zora Fenton ‘27 kept rallies going and earned points for Deerfield. Setters Charlotte Coody ‘26 and Lewis moved the ball around well and while the Vikings tightened up the score as the set went on, Deerfield took the first set, 25-18.
In the second set, King made good adjustments to their hitting to move around the blocks. Deerfield continued to put up good hits on the outside from Kunde and Annie Coody ‘29 but couldn’t quite close the gap as the Vikings took the set, 18-25.
In the 3rd set, King played great defense to keep rallies going and Deerfield made too many serve-receive errors as the Vikings took the set, 18-25.
King got out to a large lead in the 4th set, but kudos to Deerfield for fighting and closing the score with good hitting and blocking. In the end, King took a well-deserved win, 14-25.
Thanks to King for making the long trip and for a great afternoon of volleyball.
Deerfield next hosts Andover on Saturday with first serve in the Barn at 3:30pm.
