Taking the bus ride down to New Haven on Saturday, Deerfield volleyball defeated Hopkins Academy, 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-17, and 25-16).
Minus a couple of starters, Deerfield looked hesitant in the first set and the Hilltoppers took advantage with their strong hitting to extend to a big lead. Deerfield mounted a late comeback but it was too late and Hopkins took the first set.
In the second set, Deerfield built on that energy with blocks from Harmoni Dobbins ‘26 and Sophie Kamil ‘26 along with a strong service run from Charlotte Coody ‘26 to get out to a lead. Credit to Hopkins who played good defense to keep rallies going and take advantage of any Deerfield errors before DA was able to close out the set.
In the 3rd and 4th sets, Sophia Govi ‘28 and Aila Zeitlin ‘29 had fantastic serves while Evelyn Kunde ‘26 provided excellent hitting and all-around play and Annie Coody ‘29 had well-placed hits from the outside. Zoe Galaburda ‘26 played well in libero and Hayden Cwiertnia ‘29 had the final kill to give Deerfield the win.
Thanks to Hopkins for hosting today.
Deerfield begins a string of home matches on Wednesday with a tilt against Hotchkiss. First serve is scheduled for 4pm in the Barn.
