On Saturday, October 4th, the boys junior B footballers hit the road again, with a return match against the Westminster School in Simsbury, CT. Westy provided the toughest competition so far this season, leading at the half before falling 3-1 on September 20th. On an extremely warm afternoon, Deerfield pulled out a narrow, hard-fought 2-0 victory to raise their record to 5W 1D 0L on the season.
Similar to the first match, the 1st half was tight, with neither team able to put any points on the board this time. Deerfield had the edge in terms of number of shots, but the Westy keeper was up to the challenge. Luckily, the defense played well and only gave up a few chances on goal. Despite frequent subs and moving players around to try and gain an advantage, Deerfield weren’t able to score in the 1st half and it ended in a scoreless draw.
Finally, in the 40th minute, Hunter Henderson ’27 (3rd goal of the season) gave Deerfield a 1-0 lead after slotting the ball home after a scramble inside the box. The lead, however, did not feel secure, especially after Westy continued to bring in fresh subs off the bench. While they didn’t create very many chances, neither were Deerfield able to expand the lead. Just when it looked like the game was going to end that way, leading scorer Jack Keller ’26 scored his 7th goal of the season on a beautiful free kick just before time to lock the game up. Keeper Desmond Drake ’29 turned in his second clean sheet of the season.
Quad squad has a bit of a gap in the schedule coming up, with the next game not until October 15th on the road against Avon Old Farms. Game time is 3:15 pm.
