CURSE-BREAKER THE HERO AGAINST BEMENT

In a tense, nail-biting conclusion to the season, co-captain Emmett Aho ’27 was the hero, scoring the only goal of the game in the 46th minute to lift quad squad to the win and seal an undefeated season. With the win, the team finished with a 10 win, 1 draw, 0 loss record and becomes the first quad squad to finish undefeated since the 2019 team went 8-2-0.

After beating Bement 5-0 in the opening match of the season, this meeting was a totally different story. The home team controlled the run of the play in the 1st half and created more chances, while both teams hit the crossbar several times. Keeper Desmond Drake ’29 continued his recent run of strong play, making several saves to keep Deerfield in the game and maintain another clean sheet. After netting the insurance goal in the previous game to break a season-long curse, Aho took a nice pass from Hunter Henderson ’27 and found the back of the net to finally put Deerfield up. While continuing to press forward trying to find another goal, the midfield and defense played well to keep Bement off the scoreboard until the final whistle.

The race for the Golden Boot ended in a tie between Marshall Whalen ’29 and co-captain Jack Keller ’26, who each scored 8 goals. Alastair Ylvisaker ’28 was close behind with 7, while Henderson finished with 5. Once again, the defense was strong, only allowing 9 goals in 11 games, compared to 42 scored. Quad squad will take to the south division field again in August, looking to follow up on another successful season.
