The Thirds team kept the good times rolling, posting the fourth win of their undefeated season, in a home match against their friends from Northfield Mount Hermon on a breezy, cool afternoon in the Valley. While the Deerfield side was a little sluggish in the first half, their consistent improvement playing as a unit and moving the ball effectively helped them retain possession and give themselves some good chances. Jack LaRovere Abrams ’28, making his first start at striker, got Deerfield on the board five minutes into the match with a strong shot off a beautiful, perfectly placed corner kick from standout midfielder PJ Pirsh ’28. Five minutes later, Deerfield doubled the score with a Max Yau ’28 assist finished by newcomer fullback Nico Idehen ’29. Then, at 30’, Jasper Gruhl ’28, playing attacking midfielder for the first time this season, sent a ball through the NMH back line and leading goal scorer, Cole Higgins ’26, put it in the back of the net. Deerfield kept on the attack in the second half, when at 54’ Justin Treyz ’29, debuting at holding midfielder, took advantage when the keeper came out of the goal and sent a shot from outside the 18 straight in to make it 4-0. The team tried pushing Will Cleary ’29 up to the wing position and was rewarded with some textbook crosses, one of which LaRoverer Abrams made sure found the back of the net. The defense, anchored by seniors Teddy Gonzales, Magnus Selvig, and Rich Zhou, ensured that NMH couldn’t pose any serious threats. The two goals Deerfield conceded came off penalty kicks following innocent, unlucky fouls inside the box. Rookie keeper Leos Jollon ’29 has yet to allow an open field goal this season. On Saturday the team takes a trip down to Wilbraham for its annual contest against the Titans.
