In their penultimate competition on the road for the 2025 season, the Deerfield varsity field hockey team took on Loomis Chaffee on Saturday, October 11. The Doors showed resilience and played with intensity for all 60 minutes of the contest, pulling away from the Pelicans in the second half of the game.
Converting on three of their eight offensive penalty corners, the Doors found the back of the net in each quarter of play. Goalie Izzy Kirby ’26 made an impressive 23 saves to hold the strong Pelican offense to two goals. Assistant captain Chloe Cleaves ’26 opened the scoring for the Doors in the first quarter with assists from Vivian Monopoli ’26 and assistant captain Lilly Oliver ’26.
At the beginning of the third quarter, varsity newcomer Taylor Wilburn ’27 redirected a shot from Cleaves to put the Doors back in the lead. Two minutes later, Cleaves scored again with an assist from Monopoli. The Pelicans scored early in the fourth quarter and, shortly after, earned penalty corner chances to tie the game. The Doors defense, led by assistant captain Ilsa Borgen ’26, Lalwani Surpitski ’26, Eloise Hochberg, ’27, and Reagan Deery ’28, kept the Doors in the lead. Deerfield extended their lead in the last six minutes of the game, with an unassisted goal from Oliver and a tally from captain Peyton Wierl ’26, assisted by Cleaves.
The Doors look ahead to their tenth game of the season at home against Westminster on Wednesday, October 15 at 3:00pm.
