Soccer, Girls: Varsity loses to Exeter

Event Details

On a beautiful, crisp fall day, Deerfield GVS took on Exeter’s Big Red with plenty of family and friends in the stands during Family Weekend. In the first half, both teams demonstrated themselves to be evenly matched with equal chances on the attack and important defensive stops to keep the score 0-0 for much of the first 40 minutes. DA was successful in pressing Exeter’s backline and sending midfielders forward, getting a few shots off on the top of the 18 yard box. Goalkeeper for the Big Green, Angie Czeremcha ‘21, came up with a few big saves on some of Exeter’s breakaways until one of the Big Red players took advantage of space on top of the 18 year box to put a left-footed shot into the back of the net. At halftime, the score was 1-0 Exeter.

Both teams struggled to keep the ball on the ground in the second half, but still managed some quality chances. One prominent chance came from a combination between Jackson Kinsler ‘22 and Kelly Howe ‘22 where Jackson showed feet and received the ball from one of our midfielders behind the backline. Kelly made a run off of the ball, received it in the box, and finished a shot into the back of the net. Disappointingly, the goal was called back because the offside flag was up. Deerfield didn’t stop fighting until the final whistle, but the score remained 1-0. Shoutouts go to Annabel Gerber ‘20 for her consistent, tough defending in the midfield and Haley Sundstrom ‘21 for her tireless work defending the flank against some of Exeter’s speed.

The Big Green will continue their run at home after Family Weekend, facing Buckingham, Browne & Nichols on Wednesday.
