Football: Junior Varsity defeats Avon

Event Details

The feisty DA JV Football players traveled down 91 south to Avon, CT to take on the Winged Beavers in a clash that goes way back for each school. Beautiful weather at kickoff with a nice breeze!

DA would kick the ball off to start the game and the Avon boys ran out into the offensive huddle. Three quick plays for the Beavers ended with two great stops at the line of scrimmage and one tackle for loss for the spirited DA defense. DA sent their offense out on the field and began a drive which would define the game! Running backs Bryce Pang ‘22, Owen Bunten ‘23 would move the sticks all the way down the field. John Patton ‘23 and Peter Shea ‘23 led the way up front on the line for Deerfield. DA would score to go up 6-0. Avon would get one right back however with a deep pass that set up a touchdown. On the ensuing kick return, Deerfield did a great job blocking to give the offense great field position. Quarterback Michael Rooney ‘23 would bring the team back to the end zone for its second score of the game. A great catch on the drive from Luke Shields ‘22 helped to keep the drive going. Deerfield added the two point conversion to go up 14-6. Deerfield played lights out to end the half and brought that effort with them into the second half. Deerfield’s defense which was led by Tyler Simon ‘22 and Bobby Miele ‘22 worked to shut the door on the Beavers. Back and forth play by both teams led to turn over on downs. Late in the 3rd quarter DA would drive once again down to the Avon red zone. The coaches had just the play DA would need to find its way across the goal line. The team would score to push the lead to 20-6. On the next series the Avon QB would take the low snap, pick it up off the ground and throw a long touchdown pass to close the gap and make the score 20-12. As the 4th quarter started to come to a close, DA would make one more push at the end zone. Rooney would follow team leader and center Robert Amundson ‘22 on a sneak that put DA up 28-12 and put an end to any comeback from the Beavers. The clock would run out and Deerfield got back on the bus with its first win of the season! Special thanks go to Head Coach Toby Emerson who is currently on sabbatical. He sent the boys a great pregame note to get them fired up! We have a week off before our home opener against Suffield on Wednesday October 2nd.
