Ultimate, Coed: Varsity defeats MacDuffie

Event Details

JV Game: Win 15-1

After a week and a half of practices and scrimmages, the Ultimate team was on fire for its first set of scheduled games.  Austin McComb drove us out to MacDuffie School in Granby, where we played two simultaneous games with the MacDuffie coed group.  The day was sunny but windy, so players needed to adapt their game to occasional strong gusts.  D.A. players in both games took strong leads early in the games and held onto those leads for a 15-1 win and a 15-2 win.  They practiced a variety of defensive plays and implemented them well, creating a lot of turnovers. They also played against a zone defense.  The handlers did a great job moving the disk, maintaining possession and scoring despite the challenges of responding to that new defense. Players also worked on new end zone plays that were highly effective.  Ian Gordon, Luis Rodriguez and Mason Zhao were our top scorers in the two games.

More important than the score, though, was the great sportsmanship our players exhibited throughout our time at MacDuffie.  Players really embodied the spirit of the game by chatting with and making friends with their opponents and offering tips on rules and strategy along the way.  We ended the day with a big thanks to our parent/guardian fans and by singing “Happy Birthday” to player Gerald Xu.  It was a great start to the season!
