Rowing, Girls: Varsity loses to Middlesex and Nobles

Event Details

Four girls varsity boats traveled to the Concord River this past weekend for a rainy day bow ball-to-bow ball match up with Nobles and Middlesex. The Big Green was for the first time this season in a truly exciting set of races, with the perennial strong house Nobels team the favorite of the day and Middlesex right in there. A new Deerfield fourth boat line-up saw two of its members in their first ever varsity race, ending their battle in third place, just two tenths of a second behind second place Middlesex. The third boat took the middle slot behind Nobles by less than two seconds and ahead of Middlesex by a similar narrow margin, a race that could have easily gone differently.  The second boat race began with the Deerfield crew in front of the pack at the start, a position they fought stroke-by-stroke to hold through the finish line, earning their victory by slightly less than two seconds.  The first boat race brought the day’s races to a close, with Deerfield’s reigning New England Championship crew a bit sluggish off the start, giving the hungry Nobles crew the little bit they needed for a spirited victory in another nail-biter match-up.  An inspiring set of races sets the team up once again for racing against Choate, Miss Porter’s and Gunnery back at Lake Waramaug next weekend before heading to the New England championships in Worcester the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.
