Basketball, Girls: Junior Varsity defeats Cushing Academy

Event Details

On the Wednesday afternoon before Long Winter Weekend, Deerfield Academy rolled to victory over a talented team from Cushing, 43-20. The game featured good guard play by both teams, and during the second half, Deerfield’s height, strength, and athleticism began to dictate the pace of the game. Deerfield forced turnovers on defense that led to fast break scoring opportunities. Along with its fundamentally sound defense, the Green offense featured balanced scoring. Lexi Baker ’19 and Whitney Vogt ’20 led all Deerfield scorers. Captain Jada Howard ’19, Vera Grace Menafee ’20, Ruby Chase ’21, and Juliet Lowe ’21 each contributed 6 points , and Captain Nicole Da Costa ’19 and Michelle Zimmermann ’21 each found her way into the scoring column. This game was a solid team victory in which everyone had a hand by playing quality minutes, making strong passes, and competing in a game that was closer than its final score. Cushing Senior Christie Yip led all scorers with 10 points. Deerfield improves to 6-4 for the season and looks forward to opening the door on two challenging road games this week, Suffield and Loomis Chaffee.
