Basketball, Boys: Thirds defeats Cushing Academy

On Wednesday, January 17th, the boys thirds basketball team won a 40-39 thriller in OT over Cushing Academy at home in the west gym, despite squandering a 12-point half time lead. In the overtime period, Deerfield had the ball and a 1-point lead with 10 seconds remaining when Henry Renelus ’20 was fouled. He missed both free throws, but got his own rebound and was fouled again. After missing the first free throw, he hit the second to give Deerfield a 2-point lead. Cushing got off a shot that barely missed, but a foul was called with .8 seconds left. The Cushing player hit only the second free throw and Deerfield secured the victory with a quick inbounds pass. Chase Mathis ’21 led the team with 14 points and Renelus contributed 7. With the win, Deerfield moves to 2-4 on the season. The boys thirds team will be back in action on the road at Eagle Hill at 2 pm on January 20th.
