Hotchkiss downs Deerfield 4-0

On a summer like Saturday, the Deerfield 3rds field hockey team headed down to Hotchkiss to take on a formidable opponent. With just enough players to field a team, the Big Green took to the field with enthusiasm and optimism. Hotchkiss took possession early, and most of the action in the first half was in their offensive end. Though Deerfield fought hard as a team, they struggled to generate any scoring opportunities in the first half. Hotchkiss had a strong offense that notched 10 shots and 10 penalty corners in the first half alone. Deerfield didn’t back down, however, and played tough defense to hold Hotchkiss to one goal at the half. The defensive effort involved all 11 players putting in a tremendous effort to regain possession of the ball.

Deerfield regrouped at the halftime and started the 2nd half by generating some scoring opportunities. Hotchkiss’s experience and shear numbers won the day, however. Their strong hits and solid passing earned them another goal at 15:20. Deerfield managed to mount an attack and earn 1 penalty corner, 3 shots on goal, one of which just missed the net. Though they lost by a score of 0-4, this young team made their coaches proud for their sheer effort. They never gave up, kept encouraging each other and kept on fighting right up to the final whistle. It was certainly a tremendous feat for Deerfield to prevent Hotchkiss from scoring on 18 penalty corners. Goalkeeper Janice Chen ’20 also made 17 amazing saves on the day. This week we will work on generating offense to take on local rival Frontier.
