Cycling, Coed: Varsity defeats Gould Road Race

Event Details

The team loaded up the van this morning at 10am prepared for the journey north to Gould Academy…..in Maine.  The race began with a strong headwind and no team had the willingness to push the pace…it was slow, so slow that the “B” race caught and passed the “A’s”!  However, the pack hit the climb and leapfrogged the B’s quickly before hitting a steady pace for the long climb up Grafton Notch.  Teddy held on strong for a while, but fell off the back when the slopes got steep.  Julian and Alex did an exceptional job staying in the group avoiding the headwind, unfortunately Julian was involved in a crash (not his fault!) and wasn’t able to keep pace with the lead group.  Alex continued up the climb, rotating through the paceline but recognizing he was on his own for support.  With 2 kilometers remaining, Alex attacked the lead group on the pre ultimate climb and gained daylight between himself and the leading group.  Alex dug deep, suffered and was able to hold off the chase group on the final uphill sprint.  This was Alex’s first road race victory and he earned it in the toughest of ways, this was a big day for a young cyclist!
