Soccer, Boys: Junior A loses to Avon

Event Details

Boys Jr. A Soccer lost to a well-coached, athletic Avon Old Farms team 1 – 3. The game began with energetic back and forth play. Avon broke through the Deerfield back line, but Michael Scharfenberger ’21 held the Avon striker to a weak shot easily blocked by Deerfield keeper Matthew Gardner ’19. On the other end, Jonathan Glinton ’19 connected with Phillip Weymouth ’18 for a one touch shot, blocked by Avon’s mobile goalie. Theodore Donahue ’21 and Seth Blain ’20 repelled the Avon counterattack throughout the first quarter of the match. However, Avon scored two goals in quick succession before the half – the first on a beautiful cross through the DA defense, put into the back right of the net, and the second on a quick through-ball, shot from the top of the box into the upper left of the net. Avon went into the half on a 2 – 0 lead, but Deerfield rallied on the return, dominating possession for the first 15 minutes of the second half. Clean shots by James Whitely ’20, Colin Olsen ’20, and Merritt Wurts ’21 failed to find the net. Finally, Noah Jung ’20 found Jason Liu ’18 for a chip to the top right corner net past the Avon keeper to make it a one point game. Deerfield played with renewed enthusiasm, pushing up to try to tie the game. However, a breakaway by Avon in the final minutes led to a quick shot past the defense and keeper to make the final score 1 – 3.
