Soccer, Boys: Junior A loses to Westminster

Event Details

Boys Jr. A Soccer lost a hard-fought, physical match to Westminster School by a score of 2 – 3. Westminster attacked the DA net early, pushing the ball quickly up the field. Two early attempts on goal were turned away by the stout DA defensive line, but on the third the Westminster striker snuck past the last defender and put the ball into the bottom left corner of the net. DA recovered quickly, as Elliot Flagg ’20 sent the ball up to the corner for Connor Guest ’20, crossing it to James Whitely ’20 for a shot on goal. The Westminster keeper blocked the first shot of many, leading to a quick counterattack that was thwarted by goalie Matthew Gardner ’18. Merrit Wurts ’21 and Andy Han ’18 sent several crosses from the deep right corner into the box, leading to shots from Phil Weymouth ’18, but none found the net. Deerfield continued to control possession for the majority of the half, as Eric Wang ’21, Alex Strait ’21, and Whitely showed good touch and ball movement. However, a Westminster breakaway late in the half led to a quick strike past Gardner leading to a 2 – 0 Westminster lead at the half. Connor Guest ’20 came to play in the second half, sending multiple crosses to Flagg, Whitely, and Jared Faux ’20. Play centered around the Westminster box for close to 10 minutes, as DA created several opportunities but just couldn’t score. Finally, Tommie Gilmore ’20 struck into the box, reaching Guest for the quick touch to Flagg who buried it in the back of the net to make it 2 – 1. Just a few minutes later, Wang took the ball close to the length of the field, leading to a Guest strike to tie the game. Unfortunately, Westminster took advantage of a free kick in the final minutes outside the DA box to put the game away 3 – 2.
