Soccer, Girls: Junior Varsity defeats Pomfret

Event Details

On our first chilly Saturday afternoon of the Fall, the Deerfield JV girls soccer team traveled down to Pomfret and secured a win for the Big Green.

Deerfield took control of the game early on, creating a number of opportunities for quick and easy shots. While the Big Green kept firing them off, none of the shots taken were falling, and after a strong half played almost entirely on Pomfret’s end of the field, the first 40 minutes ended with a 0-0 score.

The second half started with a Pomfret breakaway and a brilliant save from our keeper, KitKat ’21. This save, in fact, was the first time she touched the ball all game. Deerfield stepped up after that scary counter attack from Pomfret’s offense, and again, brought the ball to their end for another well-controlled half.

The score remained unchanged through the second half as well, despite Deerfield’s many shots on goal. While it’s easy for teams to begin to feel a great deal of frustration in a situation like this one, the Big Green kept their composure, and with just three minutes left of play, Winnie the Pooh ’19 brought Deerfield up 1-0 with a lofty shot over the Pomfret keeper’s head and into the top of the net. Cheers erupted, but The Big Green knew they had to stand tough for two whole minutes. Immediately after play resumed, a string of passes gave Jessie, the Yodeling Cowgirl ’19, a perfect opportunity for a turn-and-shoot shot, to solidify Deerfield’s 2-0 win.

The Big Green plans to carry this momentum into their game this Wednesday, when they take on Williston on their home turf.

Go Deerfield!
