The Deerfield Academy Girls’ Varsity Basketball team lost their first game back after the winter break to Taft, by a final score of 37-30. The team put together a very strong defensive effort to contain the Big Red to under 40 points, but was unable to execute offensively to pull out the win. Senior captain Becca Harrington led the defensive charge, pressuring the ball all over the court and finishing the game with five steals. Fellow senior captains Libby Murray and Caroline Ashford also contributed a solid defensive performance in the post, pulling down seven and six rebounds, respectively, with Ashford also adding three steals of her own. Post-graduate Jess Hom paced Deerfield on the offensive end with 13 points, including three crucial three-point shots down the stretch that brought the visitors within five points of the lead during the waning minutes. However, missed shots and late-game turnovers inhibited a final comeback by the Big Green.
Deerfield looks to build off of their defense as they head into their next game on Saturday, January 11th versus Exeter.
