The Deerfield Girls’ Varsity Basketball team was simply outplayed in a 62-35 loss to Kimball Union Academy. Deerfield traveled up to KUA for one final contest before a long weekend break, but unfortunately could not string together 32 minutes of solid play. The Big Green appeared to be a few steps behind KUA for the majority of the contest. The home team spread the floor and used one-on-one play to get to the basket and score. Deerfield was out of position for help, leaving players open for easy baskets and offensive rebounds. On the offensive end, Deerfield could not put the ball in the basket – despite some open opportunities.
Junior Caroline Coppinger did her best to ignite the squad in the first half, providing most of the team’s offense and helping Deerfield get stops on the defensive end. Senior Jess Hom stepped up her game in the second half, hitting multiple three-point shots to try to keep her team within range. However, these efforts were not enough to help Deerfield keep pace with KUA.
Deerfield finished shooting just 28% from the floor (14-for-50) while surrendering 22 turnovers. Hom led the Big Green scorers with 11 points, while Coppinger put in a great all-around game with 6 points and 3 steals.
Deerfield will return to action on Wednesday, February 5th, traveling to Suffield Academy for a 3:00pm tip-off.
