Hockey: Varsity Girls defeated Vermont

With eight new underclassmen suiting up for the very first time, a young but talented Deerfield squad took on Vermont Academy at home on Friday evening in their season opener. The home team got off to a quick start, with every line forechecking effectively and creating scoring chances down low. Much of the first period was spent in the Vermont zone, and we were able to capitalize for three goals in the opening fifteen minutes. Kayla O’Connor ’14 opened the scoring by banging home a puck in front of the net after good puck movement from Meghan Halloran ’17 and Katherine Jackson ’15. O’Connor scored her second goal of the game less than five minutes later on the power play, deflecting a Jackson pass into the back of the net. Maryanne Iodice ’14 also earned an assist on the play. Lucy Lytle ’15 scored the third goal of the period, putting the puck top shelf off an assist from Devinne Cullinane ’14. The second period was a much different story, however, as questionable decision-making and poor coverage in front of the net led to several Vermont opportunities. They were able to get two goals of their own in the period, and the Big Green knew that they would have to battle hard to earn to victory. We came out strong in the third period, and were able to control much of the play, out-shooting the visitors 13-4, and held on for a good first win. Though Emily Yue ’16 was only called upon to make thirteen saves, she came up with a huge stop on a breakaway late in the third period to preserve the lead. Deerfield fired 35 shots on the Vermont goal. We will get back to work on Monday in preparation for Loomis, Nobles, and K-O next week. Many thanks to the O’Connors for the delicious mac & cheese and caesar salad after the game.
