The Deerfield Academy Girls’ Varsity Basketball team started off their season on the right foot with a thrilling overtime victory versus Holderness. The Big Green came out strong, pushing the ball up the floor to create easy baskets and gain a substantial lead. Newcomer post-graduate, Jess Hom, and senior veteran, Becca Harrington, led the initial charge for Deerfield, handling the ball and pushing the pace early. After building a double-digit advantage, Deerfield struggled from the floor and a resilient Holderness squad fought back to take the lead near the end of regulation. Deerfield never backed down despite relinquishing their initial lead, and strong low-post moves by senior captain Libby Murray kept putting points on the board for the home team. After making one of two free throws at the end of regulation, Harrington knotted up the score to force an extra four minutes of play. Upon the first second of the overtime, Deerfield took over the game. Exceptional free throw shooting and a reverse layup off of a well-executed play by Harrington sealed the deal for the squad. Deerfield pulled out with a 52-44 victory. Murray posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while fellow senior forward Caroline Ashford pulled down 11 of her own. Harrington finished 5-6 from the charity stripe, chipping in 13 points and 4 steals.
Deerfield will return to regular season action on Wednesday, December 11th at Northfield Mount Hermon, and then head to Worcester for the Blackburn Tournament December 14th and 15th.
