The Saturday of the 2012 edition of Parents’ Weekend at Deerfield sparkled with sunshine and a smattering of near-peak fall foliage. The lower levels were awash with DA parents and students alike, all enjoying a thrilling day of interscholastic competition. Around the soccer, field hockey, and football games ran the boys’ cross country team, on its way to two dual meet victories. All the races were exciting and fast, as well as remarkably close! Deerfield narrowly edged league rivals Choate and Loomis; the scores were DA 29 – Choate 30, and DA 27 – Loomis 30.
A trio of seniors led the way for Deerfield in the varsity race. Running as an impenetrable pack from the starting gun, all three boys ran smart, aggressive races that sealed the team victory for the Big Green. Robert Beit won his second race in a row, relentlessly attacking his home course to finish in a personal best 16:22. George Reich and Ben Wood were mere seconds behind, finishing in 16:26 and 16:29, respectively. With those three places secure, the meet scoring was a foregone conclusion, but Deerfield’s harriers continue to need the latter half of their pack to solidify. The boys moved closer to sealing up that second group, with impressive performances from freshman Ethan Brand (19th place) and tri-captain Teddy Romeyn (20th).
The JV race featured 100 athletes from the three schools, the largest such race in recent DAXC memory. Sophomore Gene Thagard was Deerfield’s top finisher, making his case for a move to the white jersey: he finished 10th overall in 18:34. Junior Martin Gaspar was close behind in 23rd place, followed by new sophomore Henry Sanford in 33rd place. Almost everyone in the JV race took advantage of the perfect conditions and competitive atmosphere to earn new PRs. Congratulations to all!
Next week Deerfield’s harriers travel to Exeter for a showdown with last year’s New England Champions.
