Deerfield 74, Loomis 77, Lawrenceville 88
The Deerfield Boys’ Cross Country team traveled to New Milford, CT, on Saturday and emerged victorious at the Canterbury Invitational. Narrowly defeated by Loomis Chaffee in 2011, Deerfield reversed the result this year, nipping their counterparts from Loomis by only 3 points. The final team scores were: Deerfield 74, Loomis 77, Lawrenceville 88.
Robert Beit ’13 led the way for the Big Green harriers, finishing 2nd overall in 16:38. His classmates and two of the team’s tri-captains, Ben Wood and George Reich, were the next Deerfield finishers across the line. They captured 5th and 7th place, respectively. Junior Reed Horton finished 11th overall in his first race of the season, and David Hamilton ’14 rounded out Deerfield’s scoring five with a 49th place finish. Tri-captain Teddy Romeyn was right on Hamilton’s heels, coming across the line in 56th place, and new sophomore Gene Thagard, competing in his first varsity race, finished 60th to complete Deerfield’s varsity seven.
The entire squad will be together again for next weekend’s Richard Miller invitational at the Westminster School in Simsbury, CT.
