“GREENFIELD — When Maggie Sweeney started Second Helpings community meal with Deerfield Academy at St. James Church 15 years ago, she never dreamed it would grow like it has over time.
But, Sweeney said its growth is both good and bad news.
“It’s wonderful that we get to help so many people each week, but that means many more people need our help,” she said.
Second Helpings, a hot meal served to the community every Monday night, 52 weeks a year in the church on the corner of Federal and Church streets, started out serving about two dozen, said Sweeney.
Today, she said it serves at least 75 people a week.
“I was the coordinator of the Community Service Program at Deerfield Academy in the spring of 2000, when a student approached me, asking if I’d help start a community meal,” said Sweeney…”
