Stephanie Vassar ’05, making “horse calls” as a veterinarian

“Stephanie Vassar started out on a medical school track — but today her exam room is 90 miles across and her patients are furry. The 28-year-old Gill veterinarian opened Great Falls Equine in March and makes her house called within a 45-mile radius of her Gill home.

Vassar says she was taking pre-med and economics classes at Boston College when her focus shifted.

“(I) realized that I really wanted to work on athletes, and these guys are all athletes, in their own way,” Vassar said, indicating the stalls at Stony B. Acres stables in Bernardston, where a friend’s horse was submitting to an unscheduled physical for the sake of demonstration.

Rumnoff, a 22-year-old quarter horse who competed in herding or cutting competitions in his younger days, is now out to pasture as a recreational horse for Barb Baldwin of Northfield…”
