Safety Rules

Fire Safety

Fire Exits

Secured external doors (including fire exits) may not be used by a student. Out of consideration for the safety of the dormitory residents, tampering with the locked doors may lead to disciplinary action.

Please see fire code regulations under Dormitory Policies.

Fire Drill Procedure

  1. The Dean of Students, Assistant Head of School, (or designee), will pull the fire alarm and time the evacuation process.
  2. Students should follow all exiting procedures and evacuate the building.
  3. Faculty residents are to check rooms, ascertaining that each student has evacuated, left room light on, windows closed, and door open.
  4. Students are to assemble quietly at the pre‑designated area, whereupon the respective faculty resident is to call roll.
  5. The person overseeing the drill will evaluate the drill with faculty and students and provide feedback where necessary.

Fire Precautions

  1. Fire hazards in dormitories: 1. faulty wiring and extension cords; 2. electric blankets; 3. kitchen ranges; 4. smoking and candles
  2. Know the location and use of all fire fighting equipment in your building. Never use water on electrical or grease fires. Report to the Physical Plant, at once, any extinguishers that have been used or accidentally upset so that they can be recharged.
  3. Call Security or the Physical Plant if a smoke detector goes off or if a fire alarm bell is activated, even if done accidentally.
  4. Report any minor fires, that have not required the Fire Department’s assistance, to the Physical Plant or Security so that they can be double‑checked and/or perhaps establish a pattern to other minor fires.
  5. Never leave indoors a stuffed chair, couch, or mattress that has been on fire as these are difficult to completely extinguish and can easily rekindle.
  6. At a fire on campus, faculty assistance in keeping the students at a safe distance from the fire may be necessary.
  7. Faculty residents should be sure the students know what to do, where to go, and how to call the Fire Department
  8. Keep the Fire Department number (9-911) posted by the phone on your corridor at all times.
  9. Be sure to have a list of all students in your dormitory with you at all times as you may, at some time, have to take the roll for the entire building.
  10. Fire drills in dormitories:
    1. Will be held within the first week of school and again later in the year.
    2. Warrant each corridor having a predesignated meeting place.
    3. Require that the students leave their windows closed, light on, and door open.
    4. If there exists no threat to your personal safety, walk down the corridor and close each dorm room door, checking that the room has been vacated. This procedure should be followed during every fire drill.
  11. Remember, the faculty member’s job is to save lives, not property.

Fire Safety Procedures ‑ Dormitories

IF YOU SMELL SMOKE OR HEAR THE FIRE ALARM, FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW:

  1. Close your window, open shade, and turn on light.
  2. Before opening, feel door. If warm, do not open door – signal for help via window.
  3. If the door is not warm, exit quickly. Close door but do not lock it. Sound alarm if needed.
  4. Leave your dormitory immediately through the nearest safe exit.
  5. Go directly to your predesignated gathering place for roll call and instructions.
  6. Upon authorization from fire marshal or designee, return to your dormitory.

Open Flame

The use of fire, including the lighting of matches or lighters, in any building, except under the supervision of faculty or staff is prohibited. The burning of anything, including but not limited to tobacco products, incense, candles or fireworks, poses a serious risk to all the occupants of the building.

Gambling

Gambling for money is prohibited.

Vandalism

Purposeful destruction or damage to school property or the property of any individual will not be tolerated. Included in this rule is the expectation that students will respect each other’s personal space, as well as their belongings.

Firearms/Weapons

Firearms, weapons, ammunition, fireworks or other explosives are prohibited.
