Student Jobs on Campus
Again this year there will be opportunities for students to work at the Greer Store and elsewhere at Deerfield. Students who wish to be hired for one of these jobs should be aware of VERY STRICT paperwork to satisfy governmental Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) requirements.
The Department of Homeland Security’s US Citizenship and Immigration Service requires Deerfield Academy to obtain OFFICIAL COPIES of certain documents before, or within three days after, work begins. Prospective student employees must establish identity and employment authorization to satisfy these requirements to work in the United States. Advance planning can help make those documents available when needed.
Passport
If a US citizen student has one, a current passport will establish identity and employment authorization. International students generally arrive with current foreign passports. In this case a copy of the attached Form I-94 card showing the F-1 or F-2 visa entry date is also required.
If no passport is available two documents will be required:
- Photo ID: an identification card with a photo (such as last year’s school ID card or a driver’s license) or a physical description is acceptable to establish identity.
- Social Security Card: a valid Social Security card is acceptable to establish employment authorization (original or official copies).
- Birth Certificate:Â In those rare instances in which a US citizen does not have a Social Security card, an original or certified copy (official seal required) of a US birth certificate will establish employment authorization.
Many times since the immigration law went into effect, we have run into situations in which students had difficulty obtaining OFFICIAL COPIES kept at home. They could not start or continue working as a result.
If you think your son or daughter will wish to apply for a student job, we encourage you to bring the documents to the opening of school. We can review them up to three years ahead of time.
