Student Jobs on Campus

Again this year there will be opportunities for students to work at the Greer Store and elsewhere at Deerfield. Students who want to be hired for one of these jobs should be aware of VERY STRICT paperwork.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) requires that we must see OFFICIAL COPIES of certain documents before, or within three days after, work begins. We must have proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States. Advance planning can help make those documents available when needed.

Passport

If a U.S. citizen student has one, a passport, current or expired, is all we need to verify both identity and work eligibility.

International students generally arrive with current passports. We also need to see the attached “I-94” card showing the F-1 or F-2 entry visa.

Picture ID

If no passport is available we will need to see a form of identification that has a picture (such as last year’s school I.D. card or a driver’s license) or a physical description.

Social Security Card

A valid Social Security card is acceptable for proving work eligibility. We need to see the ORIGINAL or an official copy.

Birth Certificate

In those rare instances where a U.S. citizen does not have a Social Security card, an original or CERTIFIED copy of a U.S. birth certificate can be brought in. It must have an official seal.

Many times since the immigration law went into effect, we have run into situations where students had difficulty obtaining OFFICIAL COPIES kept at home. They could not start or continue working as a result.

If you think your son or daughter will apply for a student job, it may be most convenient for you to bring the documents to the opening of school. We can review them up to three years ahead of time.
