Spyware FAQ
Has your computer been running slowly or even crashing a lot lately? Have you been having problems with pop-ups interrupting your work? You probably have software called “spyware” or “parasiteware” installed on your computer.
What is Spyware?
Spyware is software that installs itself on your computer without your knowledge when you download files from the Internet.
Why is Spyware a problem?
Spyware programs can interrupt your network connection or cause you to lose your network and Internet connection entirely. They also keep track of websites you visit and software you install on your computer, and change your homepage. Frequently they make your computer run more slowly or not run at all.
Are there specific programs to avoid downloading?
Experts indicate that if they had to choose the single worst program it would be Kazaa. In addition, the following are generally considered to be problematic:
- Atom Wire
- Audiogalaxy
- Satellite
- BearShare
- Bonzi Buddy
- Brilliant Digital
- Comet Cursor
- eAccelerator
- Gator
- Go MP3
- Grokster
- iMesh
- LimeWire
- New.Net
- SaveNow
- Zone Alarm
And more… The list changes every day. In general, you should be very careful about downloading any program from the Internet. Contact the Help Desk (
helpdesk@deerfield.edu, x1444) if you have a question about a specific application.
