As a Deerfield student, Yoo Kim ’99 was pole vault champion at New England’s three years in a row; now he is a three-time Olympian. Mr. Kim, who represents South Korea, competed in the qualifying round today, but was not among the 14 athletes who advanced to the final. A Korean national record holder in the pole vault, Mr. Kim has had a long athletic career, a passion that he discovered at Deerfield. Deerfield Magazine wrote about Mr. Kim in 1999: “As a senior, he’s still physically atwitch; a foot jiggles throughout an interview, the knees on the long legs are in a constant process of rearrangement. But during practice and competition, all that energy becomes harnessed in the service of his obsession, pole vaulting . . . There is talk that he will jump for the Korean Olympic team.”

Recent alumnus Jem Wilner ’11, in his year off before starting Tufts University this fall, presents a new play, Stories of a Lifetime, in collaboration with New England Youth Theatre and Hilltop House.

Stories of a Lifetime is a compilation of monologues and dialogues based on interviews that Jem conducted with residents of retirement communities, including Hilltop House. Through sharing these stories, Jem hopes to bring to life the history of a generation.

Jem has been an active student at New England Youth Theatre for many years and feels that the community has helped him cultivate his love for acting. This will be the first play that Jem has ever written and directed, and he will also be acting as the narrator of the show.

The show plays at New England Youth Theatre, 100 Flat St., in Brattleboro, Vermont on Friday, April 27, at 7pm, and Sunday, April 29 at 2pm. Tickets will be by donation and only available at the door. Suggested donation of $5, with the profits going to the Hilltop House activities fund and the Angels in the Wings Scholarship Fund, which helps children enjoy the incredible programs New England Youth Theatre offers for kids of the Brattleboro area. Students with any questions should contact Mr. Fry.
