Get into the holiday spirit with Historic Deerfield’s Heritage Holiday, a special holiday program offered daily December 7-29 (excluding December 24 & 25). Besides daily hearth cooking and giftmaking, horse-drawn wagon rides and gingerbread cookie decorating will be offered on select weekends.
You can also get more involved by participating in the Heritage Recipe Baking Contest, Historic Deerfield’s first-ever baking contest featuring your family recipes. The contest is sponsored by King Arthur Flour, and they are supplying fantastic prizes to the winners. Deadline for entry is November 22. Fifteen finalists will be invited to bring prepared recipes to the Heritage Baking Day program on December 7 for judging.
And if you’ve ever wanted your work featured in a museum, join our neighbors on the Street by making gingerbread houses. Last year the Visitor Center at Hall Tavern felt cozy and seasonal because of staff-made gingerbread houses inspired by the architecture of the street. You can drop your houses off in the first week of December, and they will be displayed through Sunday, December 29. Anyone can make a gingerbread house, and there are plenty of resources available to help you. Check out Historic Deerfield’s PDF with step-by-step instructions and templates, as well as photos of last year’s houses. Youtube also has many great instructional videos. Contact Amanda Lopez (firstname.lastname@example.org or 413-774-7216) to let her know you’d like to participate in the gingerbread house display–the more the merrier!
