Girls Varsity Cross Country – New England Champions, Again!

Cullinane, Dennis – November 13, 2013

River-falls-CrossCountryThey did it! The pressure was on this fall as the girls in green looked to defend their title from 2012. Indeed, the competition was stiff this year but the Big Green Machine managed to narrowly defeat a powerful third place Andover by 30 points and a surging second place St. Paul’s by a mere five points. The weather greeting the girls as they arrived in Concord, NH was bone chilling but eventually warmed to ideal running conditions for the race start at 1:30. An unprecedented four false starts (runners falling within the first 100 meters, calling back all runners to start again) lent the race a surreal effect but when the gun finally was not recalled the Deerfield girls charged to the front and essentially never let go of their vise-like grip on the championship. At the awards the announcer read off the school names by order of reverse finish and so one could hear a pin drop when it came time to announce second place. Understandably the girls went berserk when they heard the Name “St. Paul’s” announced for second place, meaning Deerfield had won; there were hugs, cheers, and tears all around. Back to the race: Leading the Big Green in her swan song XC race in the green and white was co-captain Devinne Cullinane with a third place finish in 19:01, followed by Phoebe Morss (8th, 19:51), Caroline Wagner (13th, 20:07), co-captain Lilah Lutes (25th, 20:36), Samantha Morse (33rd, 20:57), Lauren Ilsley (47th, 21:28), and Margo Downes (58th, 21:51). For the JV, who finished fourth overall (also defeating arch rival Choate), Claire Petrus lead all runners, winning the event in 20:57. Following Claire were Heidi Hunt (24th, 22:35), Olivia Pivirotto (31st, 22:53), Nahla Gedeon Achi (37th, 23:01), Madisen Siegel (40th, 23:05), Megan Retana (65th, 23:07), Penelope Hough (67th, 23:50), Madeleine Genereux (70th, 23:54), Taylor Morash (87th, 24:39), and Bergen Carloss (114th, 27:00).

The Deerfield girls and coaching staff wish to thank the parents of these wonderfully talented and enthusiastic young woman for all their support, fitting us in their busy lives, and their attention to our races. You’re the best! Dr. C wishes also to thank every single girl on Deerfield Cross Country and both coach Zranchev and coach Karbon for a season of joy, laughter, and unparalleled success.

Go Big Green!
