“I drink bottled water for the taste” and other myths

April 14, 2013

Deerfield Academy is Taking Back the Tap! We have great tasting, great quality drinking water, and we’re trying to encourage people to kick the nasty bottled water habit. To raise awareness of our excellent tap water, our e-proctors recently conducted a blind taste test of our tap water, filtered tap water (from our dining room pitcher filler), and bottled water. Over one hundred people were asked to pick the best tasting water, and the results were overwhelming: filtered tap water tastes better than bottled water.

In fact, even 70% of students that said they “drank bottled water for the taste” preferred the taste of filtered tap water over bottled!

Water for taste

Here are some facts about bottled water:

* Bottled water often costs 2000x the price of tap water (would you pay $10,000 for a sandwich???), and about half of bottled water (Aquafina, Dasani, etc.) is just tap water that has been repackaged and sold for MUCH more.

* Water is heavy – so shipping/trucking it around the world uses a lot of fuel (enough for 1.5 million cars a year) and creates a great deal of air pollution.

* Bottled water is LESS regulated than tap water in the United States, and independent testing of popular brands has shown an average of 8 pollutants in that expensive bottled water.

* 75% of used water bottles end up in landfills, lakes, and oceans (and NOT recycled).

At Deerfield Academy, every dorm corridor has a filtered water spigot in the bathroom to fill reusable water bottles. Filtered water “hydration stations” have been installed around campus, and filtered water is used for the pitcher filling station in the dining hall. ¬†Bottled water is not sold at DA, and starting in the fall, will not be provided to students on athletic trips (and other school-sponsored travel) either. In the future we’ll be working on reducing bottled water use at events like graduation, alumni weekend, and 2nd visit days as we work to Take Back the Tap!
