Tonight at 8:15pm, the Deerfield Choral Society will perform Johannes Brahms’ “Ein Deutsches Requiem” (a German Requiem), with pianists Larry Schipull & Nadine Shank, soprano Sierra Janik ’13, and baritone Steve Curylo. Widely considered one of the greatest choral masterworks of all time, this work offers a profound reflection on human mortality. Rather than the traditional texts of the Roman Catholic Requiem liturgy, Brahms chose uplifting texts that focus on comforting those left behind, which he set to music of exquisite beauty and intense drama. Over 150 years after its first performance, this work continues to have profound relevance; this performance will be dedicated to the victims of last week’s bombing at the Boston Marathon. The concert will take place in the Reid Performing Arts Center of the Memorial Building at Deerfield Academy. Admission is free and open to the public.
