June 1, 2010 | Bright sunshine and a gentle breeze only added to the Class of 2010’s happiness on Sunday, May 30, as 190 seniors were presented with Deerfield Academy diplomas. Following tradition, the class processed into the Commencement Tent led by Bagpiper Eric Goodchild, through a gauntlet of clapping underclassmen and members of the faculty.
Commencement began with an invocation by Dean of Spiritual and Ethical Life Jan Flaska, and a welcome from President of the Board of Trustees Philip Greer ’53 P’94 G’13. Following Head of School Margarita Curtis’ greeting, classmate-elected speakers Hannah Flato and Stephen Kelley took to the podium. The Deerfield Cup was awarded to Harrison Chase Weidner of New York, New York, and Lutai Ju of Shanghai, China, was presented with the Robert B. Crow Award.
Keynote speaker Rush McCloy ’92 reminded graduates of their good fortune to have attended Deerfield, and urged them to hold on to their Deerfield relationships. Following the presentation of diplomas, the Class of 2010, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen, and the families and friends of the graduates joined together in singing The Evensong.
